Health citations in Houston restaurants: “Roaches in bags of onions”

As Health Inspectors found food debris and improperly stored food at several other restaurants during an inspection tour from October 8 to 15, at least two Houston restaurants were forced to deal with a widespread roach problem in their establishments.

The Houston Chronicle obtained the results of routine health inspections throughout the city and tallied each restaurant's demerits for a comprehensive list of violations. Some highlights were:

  • Roach infestation in tomatoes boxes, bags of onions, on rolling racks and behind reach-in coolers
  • Oyster container used to store other food; broken gasket on reach-in cooler
  • Chicken, shrimp, pate, beef, rice, pork, eggroll and noodles stored at improper temperature
  • Roaches in bar area, on door hinges, on refrigerator gaskets, by microwave, by restrooms
