The mirabelle harvest in the Tarn valley has begun and looks promising. Production is expected to reach 500 tons this year, taking over cherry production. The trees are heavy with brightly coloured, juicy, sweet fruit that is fully mature. Acreage has more than tripled in 10 years.
Some producers have turned from cherries to mirabelles as they are less vulnerable to weather and pests (notably the drosophila fruit fly). Local cooperatives have begun distribution and hope to find buyers until the end of September.
