Vietnamese potato supply cannot meet demand
Vietnam has favourable condition to grow potatoes, with supply abundant in many localities. However, domestic potato processing firms are facing supply shortages.
In 2018, the Orion Vina confectionery company will need 18,000 tons of potatoes. To ensure local potato supply, the company has collaborated with 15,000 potato farms nationwide. However, these now can only meet 40 percent of the company’s needs.
Orion Vina’s demand for potatoes will increase in the future. Specifically, in the next two years, it needs up to 22,000 and 25,000 tons of potato respectively.
Vietnam produces 350,000 tons of potato each year. However, only 100,000 tons can be used for processing. Therefore, numerous companies are importing potato for processing. Furthermore, Vietnam now has only three varieties of potato suitable for processing.
According to en.vietnamplus.vn, the potato crop lasts for only three months in the winter. It is necessary to create potato varieties which are more heat-resilient to ensure a potato supply throughout the year.
