At least five portions of fruit and vegetables should be included in our daily diet. Meanwhile, almost 1/3 of Poles say that they just eat two or three servings. Considering experts' recommendations, it is definitely not enough. Despite the still insufficient consumption of these products, Polish consumers, however, have their preferences. Based on the research carried out in the framework of the campaign "Vegetables and fruits - thankfully!", tomatoes and apples are the most popular products.
Among the favourite Polish vegetables, tomatoes lead the way, picked by 58% of respondents. Carrots also stand high in the ranking, as it is mentioned by half of the respondents, and cucumbers, potatoes and cabbage are also popular. The least mentioned are capers, kale, aubergines, artichokes, chickpeas and lentils, which are picked by less than 3% of the respondents.
"The results confirm that Poles especially appreciate their well-known domestic products. It is difficult to imagine Polish cuisine without such vegetables as potatoes, carrots, onions, peppers or beets; however, we should also try to consume other extremely valuable, but less frequently used vegetables, such as leek, celery, courgettes, peas, pumpkin or broad beans," said Agnieszka Falba-Gałkowska, Director of the Office of the Federation of Trade Unions of Agricultural Producers, organiser of the campaign.
Not surprisingly, apples are the most consumed fruit in Poland and are picked by 71% of respondents. The fruit is way ahead of other products in this category. Next in the ranking are exotic ones, namely bananas, oranges and mandarins. When looking at domestic fruits, the most popular are pears, strawberries and cherries.
The nationwide information and educational campaign "Vegetables and fruits - fortunately!" is financed with money from the Fruit and Vegetable Promotion Fund. The campaign is organised by the Federation of Trade Unions of Agricultural Producers.
