Indian Nipah scare: Gulf countries ban fruit & vegetables from Kerala state

As a Nipah infection was confirmed in some of the districts in Kerala, and 14 people died because of it, the Gulf countries have put a ban on import of vegetables and fruits from Kerala. Countries like the UAE and Bahrain have informed the central government that there will be no imports from Kerala until further notice. This new move comes after people were infected by the Nipah virus because they ate fruits and vegetables, touched by bats.

Kerala exports about 130 to 150 tons of fruits and vegetables to the Gulf countries from Kochi on a daily basis. Exports are also shipped via Thiruvananthapuram and Karipur airports.

According to kaumudiglobal.com, there is a good demand for fruits and vegetables from Kerala which are shipped through frozen containers. The vegetables from Kerala are exported under the Kerala Organic brand name. These vegetables are exported to countries like Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman and Bahrain after gaining certificates after being tested under the supervision of agricultural scientists.
