China: Differences between domestic and imported fruit prices grows smaller

The price of fruit is determined by many different elements. These elements include product quality, product origin, etc. In recent years, Chinese consumers have already become aware of the shrinking price difference between domestic fruit and imported fruit as a consequence of the growing volume of imported fruit in China. Furthermore, part of the domestic fruit production has already surpassed imported fruit. They have successfully overtaken imported fruit. There are three main reasons that together explain this phenomenon.

First, the level of Chinese agricultural technology has significantly improved in the last few years. The quality of fruit itself has increased as a result of this technological development. Furthermore, there has been a trend of increasing variety in available fruit products. Apart from this, innovations in packaging and improvements in distribution better satisfy consumer demand and create a desire to buy.

Second, the national economy of China develops rapidly year after year. The disposable income of the people shows a relatively great increase compared to previous years. This further strengthens purchasing power and attracts the attention of overseas export traders. The volume of imported fruit on the Chinese market shows an increasing trend year after year. These days, imported fruit is no longer 'unusual'. The price of imported fruit increases at a slower speed compared to previous years. In some cases, for example cherries, the price even dropped.

Third, the customs policies between various countries create trade bridges between countries for the import and export of fruit. People in the industry as well as organizations in the national industry work hard together to allow more and more fruit varieties from overseas to enter the Chinese market. This provides Chinese consumers with even more choice when it comes to imported fruit.

There are of course other reasons, in addition to the three discussed above, that influence the prices of domestic and imported fruits. Overall, we are already pleasantly surprised by the improvement of domestic fruit production in the last few years. And we are confident that in the future the development of domestic fruit production will reach new heights.
