Spain: Granada, leading exporter of asparagus in Europe

The province of Granada has more than 6,000 hectares devoted to asparagus and produces an average of 32,000 tonnes per year, generating 70 million Euro in turnover and 420,000 wages. Furthermore, the province is a leader both domestically and in Europe in the field of exports, reaching a total of 30 million Euro.

These figures were reported by the General Secretary of Agriculture and Food of the Government of Andalusia, Rafael Peral, and the territorial delegate of Agriculture, Manuel García Cerezo, during the event at which the asparagus cooperative Agroláchar celebrated its twentieth anniversary.

During his speech, the General Secretary pointed out that cooperatives are essential for the development of the agro-food sector, since they "help to better distribute wealth by putting people before capital."

The main challenges for Andalusian cooperatives are to continue growing and improving in terms of quality, to open up to foreign trade and to innovate.

The cooperative Agroláchar was founded in 1996 with the sole purpose of making green asparagus production profitable. It has 190 partners/producers with a total of 350 hectares, which produced 1.2 million kilos in the latest campaign.

It is part of the Fruit and Vegetable Producers Organization Espárragos de Granada, SCA., one of the ten FVPO's in the province, which received about 5.6 million Euro from the operational funds for the year 2016 for the benefit of 3,767 producers.
