The growth of Radicchio Rosso di Treviso Precoce Igp has been slightly delayed due to the high temperatures in August. Harvesting should therefore start around 7th-8th September.
Paolo Manzan, President of Consorzio di Tutela Radicchio Rosso di Treviso e Variegato, confirms that "the weather in August blocked plant growth for a few days, and the gap was never recovered. But quality wasn't affected and consumers will be pleased."
"Retailers are increasingly interested and orders are coming in. Traceability and certifications (not just Pgi, but GlobalGAP as well) are essential for supermarkets and our product is therefore perfect."
The early variety, not to be mistaken with the late one (which will be available after the second November frost), has a different cultivation technique (forcing in fields vs. whitening in water) with a typical oblong shape and wider ribbing.
The consortium is currently collecting information as regards cultivated areas, which they seem to have increased compared to last year.
