Chicory market better than at start of summer

“It’s going slightly better with chicory than this time last year. The market situation isn’t great, but better than at the start of the summer. We had a bad situation of about six weeks ago because of the heat. Right now, demand and supply seem to be balanced.”

“We don’t quite know how this happened,” says Gijs van Dongen from Nature’s Gold. “Perhaps people planted fewer roots after all. And perhaps we profited from the extreme weather throughout Europe. In one country the vegetables are burning, and in another they’re drowning. The weather here is a bit mild for summer. Chicory prices often benefit from that as well.”

He indicates prices are fair, as is demand. “Export appears to be going regularly, we haven’t seen any crazy movements or remarkable things.” According to Gijs, the current market situation could last a while longer. “If it doesn’t become too warm, there won’t be too much supply. There isn’t an excessive amount of roots, so production will be similar to last year, or perhaps even a bit lower.”
