Algeria: Sharp increase of citrus production in Boumerdes
After the recent end of the campaign, it has been confirmed that the Algerian state of Boumerdes has achieved a fruitful citrus production this season. The total volume this year (in 13 varieties) has exceeded the 40 thousand tonnes; a great figure compared to recent years, as in 2016 the production reached 35 thousand tonnes.
Also, the average yield per hectare during this season has ranged between 200 and 205 kantars, while the yield in the last three years has not exceeded 100 to 120 kantars per hectare.
This significant improvement has been attributed to several factors, the most important being the rainfall that was recorded at the right time, without causing any damage in the early stages, the moderate weather conditions during the growth stage, as well as the abundance of irrigation water, the absence of plant diseases or the availability of fertilizers and their good use.
Boumerdes producers are known for growing the Thomson Navel orange variety, which accounts for more than 60 percent of the total citrus acreage, and the remainder of the total is especially devoted to the cultivation of lemons and other citrus species.
