Today, June 14, it's World Cucumber Day! And what would this day be without a fresh domestic supply of cucumbers at your local supermarket. British market intelligence service ProduceView analysed for us the current offerings at the UK-retail.
Fans of British grown cukes will be pleased this week as most of the British retailers will have a good supply of domestically grown cucumbers available. Growers in the UK are in full production and while some Spanish cucumber and eggplant growers have extended their season, the British cucumbers are well represented at retailers such as Sainsbury's, Morrisons, Co-op, M&S, and Waitrose.
Also Aldi, Asda and Tesco had British cukes on their shelves over the past few weeks, but at the moment of the survey, these supermarkets offered Dutch cucumbers.
Lidl is the only retailer that hasn't offered any British cucumbers this year. They still prefer Spanish, and lately Dutch cucumbers. Last week they ran a promotion by offering Dutch cucumbers at 39p. This week prices are back at 44p at Lidl and Aldi is offering Spanish cucumbers at 39p.
Prices at other retailers are in between 45p (Morrisons) and 55p at Co-op and Waitrose. M&S, Tesco, Sainsbury's and Asda are offering cucumbers for 50p.
