Japan: Japanese muskmelons auctioned for the first time this year

On the 26th of May, Hokkaido muskmelons, "Yubari melons", were auctioned for the first time at the Sapporo Central Wholesale Market. The highest price for two melons was 1.5 million yen (around 90,000 yuan). Last year's auction price of 3 million yen for 2 melons was the highest in history. Compared to last year, this year's price has lowered again.

The melons that were auctioned were from the "Zangzhong shop" from Sapporo Fruit Wholesale Company. It is said that they will be given to the Hokkaido primary school as a gift. One of the board members (55 years old) smiles and says: "The priority here is to bring the products on the market. The children usually cannot eat it. This shows Hokkaido's gratitude."

The mayor of Hokkaido attended the auction, and says: "The sunshine today is great. It is a good beginning. It is very rare that the melons are given to the children."

According to the agricultural cooperation of Hokkaido, today, nine farmers auctioned 580 muskmelons.
