Photoreport of Agroalimentaria 2017, Dominican Republic

Last week the Agroalimentaria took place in the Renaissance Santo Domingo Jaragua Hotel. This 3 day event is biannual. It has become the most important international event for food, beverages and tobacco in the Caribbean. The most innovative feature this year was the matchmaking technology that resulted in many positive business meetings. The exhibition was especially busy in the afternoons and even on Saturday, which was the last day.

Everyone experiences this event on his own way. For example, one exhibitor is there to increase its export of pineapples and hopes to meet many interesting buyers at the stand and as well in the business meetings. Others, like at any other show, also meet many of their existing contacts. Moreover, the organization believes the people might lack information and therefore try to have a diverse offer of conferences. This is to inform their people and educate if necessary to improve their business.

However, the most important event at this exhibition has been the matchmaking. A commercially available technology has been used but it was fully customized for this show. The exporters subscribed and gave their information about what they have to offer and the buyers subscribed with their information and what they were looking for. The technology did the matchmaking, which made it possible to have organized meetings throughout the whole day.

For some of the visitors it may have been disappointing in some ways, because they were expecting an exhibition as we normally visit in our sector. This isn’t the case as the exhibition area is only small and it needs to be shared with other sectors. However, as soon as you make use of all the aspects the event has to offer it becomes a lot more interesting. You have to combine this exhibition with the conferences and especially with the matchmaking.

Innovations

As the event covered several sectors, only a part of it is related to the fresh fruits and vegetables sector. The same was true of the selection of innovative products, of which only three were fresh food related.
1. Cherry tomatoes and mini cucumbers of Natura Fields
2. Aromatic herbs and ready to eat pre-packed salads of Lucas Perez
3. “Lider Fresh” pre-packed fruits and vegetables

Trends
JAD explained beforehand that there are some new trends in the market, starting with organic crops, which are increasing in the Dominican Republic. Moreover, the exotic fruits such as starfruit are becoming more popular and their is an increasing in demand for these products in European countries.

In a previous publication, it was said by the organization that the Dominican Republic is always looking into newer markets. The country still has big opportunities on the Caribbean Islands for certain fruits and vegetables. Moreover, the Asian market is starting to develop more and countries like Saudi Arabia and The Emirates are potential export markets.

The Dominican Republic is growing as an export country, now the organization hopes they get an opportunity to grow with this event as well.
