Tasmanian walnut harvest starts with good supply

Phil and Jane Dening's Coaldale walnut farm at Richmond has just begun their annual harvest which will run for the next few weeks. Mr Dening said that, after a disappointing harvest last season, things were looking good for the 2017 crop.

"We had a brilliant spring with a lot of good growth. We had good pollination so it's probably three times bigger than the previous harvest," he said.

"Each week we do a pass through the orchard which takes three or four days and we process those nuts as they come out of the orchard."

The orchard grows both Chandler and Franquette varieties with the Franquette being a polleniser as well as a fruit producer and Chandler as the main variety, supplying around 85 per cent of the nuts. Demand for their fresh walnuts and kernels is so strong in Tasmania that the harvest this year will all be sold locally.

"We used to export to some of the nut wholesalers in Sydney and Adelaide but now our nuts don't leave the state," Mr Dening said.
