Bulgaria: Growth of both agricultural production and acreage

Bulgaria's agricultural production and its total acreage have recorded a significant growth for the second consecutive year, as announced in a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture and Food (MAF). In 2016, the acreage devoted to vegetables and perennials grew by 26.1% and 5.6% compared to 2015. There was also a 45% increase of newly created permanent crops and state support for them grew by nearly 53% compared to the previous year.

The MAF stated that "this has been possible thanks to the prioritising of subsidies for the fruit and vegetable sector, with direct support growing by between 2.5 and 5 times."

Over the past two years, the country's organic production has also been developing particularly well. The organic crop production harvested has significantly increased and reached 46 thousand tonnes; 17.2% more than in 2014 and almost 3 times more than in 2013.
