Female entrepreneur inspiring locals in Guatemala

Sandra Ciquin from Guatemala is helping to empower other women to become more independent and join her in the agriculture industry. She began an all-female farming cooperative and entered a marketplace dominated by men. Now by teaching women the trade, and the ins and outs of exporting to the US market, she is making a real difference.

She encountered many challenges getting the organization to the point it is now. One of the many reasons she started this in the first place was the rampant discrimination she faced from fellow farmers, saying women could not work the fields. To prove them wrong, the cooperative was founded and has grown since.

Due to the efforts of The Women’s Cooperative, prosperity has found its way to several communities in the Guatemalan highlands – along with better education and healthcare. The group helps 450 families export their vegetables and is composed entirely of women. They do accept outside help to get vegetables ready for export however, but besides that, it is a woman's world, and Sandra is proud of the work she has accomplished in creating the women's cooperative.
