India's fruit vendors going digital after demonetisation

A vendor in the city of Bhubaneswar is smiling again as things are finally looking up after the recent demonetization rocked the agriculture industry in India. Trade had drastically been affected for Bhaskar Sahu, the trader, but after a move to digital payments via Paytm things are changing.

A few days after the demonetization some farmers had to pay out of the pocket to stay afloat but they have said prices are gradually going back up and things are getting better since the move to digital payment. About 80 percent of 20 shops in the market have put up the Paytm board while the remainder are using PoS machines.

“Fruit trade is limping back slowly. It was severely affected throughout November due to less cash flow. Even though there is a scarcity of smaller denomination notes, the trade has gained pace with the introduction of e-payment systems,” he said.

With trade increasing week by week the vendors at the market are hoping that the worst times are behind them. It is still a bumpy road ahead but the traders are pleased to be able to continue business again unimpeded.
