Australia: New fruit fly facility to combat infestation

A new $3.8 million fruit fly production facility has been opened by Agriculture Minister Leon Bignell in Port Augusta. The facillity looks to combat infestation of fruit flies by producing 50 million sterile males and release them in fruit fly infested areas hoping to lower their numbers.

They expect that, by releasing the large number of sterile males, it will decrease the chances of successful reproduction of the pest. The minister explained, though, that it is just one of the methods they are using to prevent a full infestation.

“It’s really important we have lots of different approaches in protecting and promoting our horticultural sector in SA.”

“We’ve seen (fruit fly) numbers build up across the border and the more fruit fly you have in neighbouring states, the bigger the risk there is of those incursions coming into SA,” he said.
