Nepal: Vice President worried at rising import of agro products

The Vice President of Nepal, Nanda Bahadur Pun, has noted his concern that rising imports are creating a trade deficit he fears will stymie the rapidly growing economy.

“Our trade deficit is widening with each passing year. We imported Rs 8 billion worth of vegetables and Rs 23 billion worth of rice from our neighboring countries in the last fiscal year. It is a matter of shame that the country with large stretches of fertile land has been importing agro products in such a large quantity,” Pun said.

Pun remains positive citing macroeconomic markers which have been pointing towards a better situation for the country's economy.

“It may be difficult for the country if the remittances continue to fall. The remittance inflow has become uncertain. So we have to boost our production,” he stated.
