Last week (October 15-21, 2016), Fruit-Inform's Ukrainian fresh produce
price index grew by 14.5%, after a rise of 1.5% a week before. As a result, fruit and vegetable prices have increased on average by 49.1% in Ukraine over the past 6 weeks.
Greenhouse vegetables again made the largest contribution to the price growth last week, and an increase in their prices was backed by autumn weather, lower supply and rather active demand shown by exporters. As a result, prices of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes have jumped by 46.4% last week and exceeded last year’s levels.
Prices of traditional vegetables went up by 1.8%. A rather significant increase in carrot prices was partially compensated by less expensive white cabbages. Growers started harvesting late varieties of white cabbages, and their supply grew and started impacting prices.
An increase in fruit prices was less significant due to the growing supply of citrus fruits. In addition to less expensive mandarins and lemons, a negative price trend was registered in the banana market. In general, fruits became 11% less expensive in Ukraine over a week.
