Three towns in the Izmir district of Turkey, Urla, Çeşme and Karaburun, contribute 21% of Turkey’s artichoke production, with an average yield of 7,000 tons.
The Izmir Mercantile Exchange has now applied to Intellectual property authorities for the “Urla Sakiz artichoke” to be granted geographical indication protection, which they are expecting to get in 2017.
According to Işınsu Kestelli, Chair of the Exchange, the region’s climate and soil produce a unique quality and yield rate “the protection will enable us to become a brand and open better marketing opportunities in both internal and external markets”.
