In Eastern Bays, Community Fruit Harvesting is asking people with excess fruit to register their trees so that it can be donated to families who struggle to make ends meet.
"We're a charity that picks unwanted fruit from trees in people's gardens to donate, as fresh or preserved, to causes such as refugee centres, food banks and low decile schools," Community Fruit Harvesting (Eastern Bays area) co-ordinator, Jess Ogg, says.
"It always bothered me how much good, fresh fruit goes to waste sitting unwanted on trees or being left to rot on lawns in gardens around town.
"Especially when it could be utilised by people who may struggle to pay high supermarket prices for fresh produce."
After some research Ogg discovered Di Celliers' Community Fruit Harvesting initiative and decided to get involved.
Community Fruit Harvesting is a year round initiative and people interested in making fruit donations can register by telephoning Jess Ogg.
The registration process includes a provision for the amount of fruit people wish to donate.
"There are some wonderful volunteer pickers and preservers already signed up in the area and some great causes eagerly accepting fruit.
"But we need more fruit donations, so we can increase the impact of this initiative in the Eastern Bays," Ogg says.
To register a fruit tree telephone 027 340 1064.
