China: Bad market for Gala apples

The end of August is the best time for selling Gala apples from Yantai, at the East coast of China. This year though, prices have been a sad disappointment - a kilogram of apples is selling for no more than 2.8 RMB to 3 RMB.

How is it that the ever popular Gala apple faces this difficulty? A traveling trader from Jiangsu province, Yuzhou, states that the root of the problem lies in a supply that is larger than the demand. He says that "with supply outmatching demand, the market situation in the whole of China is bad. We can't demand high prices, because the market will not sustain them. Good fruits are now only worth 1.4 RMB to 1.5 RMB."

Moreover, because the weather was rather hot this year, a larger proportion of the fruits are blemished. This is another factor that influences the price of the apples. One fruit farmer revealed that the percentage of blemished fruits was typically 3% to 4% in previous years. This year it is nearer 70% to 80%. In fact, there are almost no unblemished apples this year. Also, there are a lot of apples. In fact, in the last two years, there have always been leftovers from the production volume.
