Light supplies of imported cucumbers

Shipments of cucumbers coming into the United States from Mexico have been light recently, and prices have been high as a result. Undulating production down south has brought volume swells and troughs, leading to an alternating market this summer.

“There's a little gap in production of cucumbers coming in from Baja that will last for a few days,” said Chris Tagami with Fresh Pac International in Oceanside, California. “The heat initially brought cucumbers on fast, so we had a lot, and now we're in a gap that's followed that.”

Prices have been strong as a result of light supplies. On August 17, prices for a carton of medium Greenhouse 1 cucumbers from Mexico were between $18.95 and $22.95 at crossings through Otay Mesa. Prices for a carton of fair quality cucumbers were between $16.95 and $20.95, and prices for a carton of ordinary quality cucumbers were between $10.95 and $12.95.

“Prices will go down when supplies are back up,” noted Tagami. “The market will just depend on if everyone comes in at the same time with a lot of cucumbers, but, right now, we're in a gap.”
