Sri Lanka: Geographical indication for Ceylon Pineapples

The head of the state export promotion office has said that Sri Lanka is seeking geographical indication (GI) for pineapples to certify the country of origin.

Indira Malwatte, head of Sri Lanka's Export Development Board, said the fruit will be branded as the 'Ceylon Pineapple'.

"We believe Ceylon Pineapples have a special quality," she told a forum in Colombo organized by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.

Sri Lanka is also trying to prevent the abuse of the 'Ceylon Tea' brand and 'Ceylon Cinnamon' with GI certification.

There have been complaints by some quarters that the Ceylon Tea label had been placed on teas sold in foreign markets, which originated from elsewhere.
