Germany: Sour cherry production down 26%
According to the German Statistical Office, this year's sour cherry harvest will be smaller, although there will be more sweet cherries than in 2015. The decrease in the production of sour cherries is expected to amount to 26 percent compared to the average of the past ten years, while the stock of sweet cherries will be 2 percent greater.
Germany's total sour cherry harvest in May this year amounted to 48,100 tonnes, which was about 9 percent below the average of the past decade. This decrease in the harvested volume was mostly the result of the negative impact of hail and frost during the blooming period.
For their part, sweet cherries are grown in Germany in a total of 5,100 hectares. The largest orchards are located in Baden-Württemberg.
The most important cherry cultivation regions are the Rhine-Palatinate and Saxony. The acreage devoted to cherry orchards in Germany amounts to about 2 thousand hectares.
