Berry demand in Europe expected to grow by 7%
Many European countries may follow in the footsteps of the US, where berries have become some of the most popular fruits in the market, even above apples or oranges. Although it is unlikely that all European countries will follow this trend, "the sky is the limit" for this emerging sector, as outlined in a report by Rabobank.
The demand for fresh berries in the US has soared, mostly as a result of their many beneficial properties and sales have already exceeded $ 5.6 billion. Rabobank expects demand in Europe to grow by 7% over the next five years, with fresh blueberries, raspberries and blackberries leading the way and strawberries growing by about 2%.
However, to achieve this, the market needs a constant supply of fresh fruit of large size and great taste. "Greater availability, improvements in the selection process and the creation of better distribution networks, combined with lower prices, will help develop the fresh berry market in the EU," said Cindy Van Ritzgouik, analyst for fruit and vegetables at Rabobank.
Strawberries
Strawberries are, and will remain, the largest and more "mature" market in the fresh berry segment. The strawberry industry is transforming and is increasingly escaping its former fragmentation and seasonality.
Blueberries
Year-round demand for blueberries is growing rapidly in the EU, giving a boost to both imports and the local European production.
Raspberries and blackberries
New varieties and modernised farming methods are the key characteristics that are shaping the European market for raspberries and blackberries. Producers aim for a more comprehensive and annual approach to ensure the rapid development of the sector.
Other berries
In addition to the main types of berries on the market, there are others, like cranberries, red and blackcurrants, kiwi berries, etc. These are not expected to reach a dominant position, but they may be interesting alternatives for the producers.
