Over 22 million Euro to compensate Czech growers hit by drought

The Czech government will cover part of the losses suffered by agricultural producers as a result of last year's drought. A total of 600 million crowns (about 22 million Euro) will be allocated to this end. The money shall be given to growers who saw their production fall by at least 30 percent compared to the average of the preceding three years.

"It's intended for producers devoted to so-called sensitive commodities, especially fruits, vegetables, potatoes, hops or sugar beet. The growers will have to provide evidence about the extent of the loss and then will be reimbursed part of the costs," stated Agriculture Minister Marian Jurečka, of the KDU-CSL.

The government will use 300 million crowns from the budget reserve and the rest will come from the department's own budget.
