"Wim Meyers: "Prices shouln't drop anymore this week"

2016 a late year for strawberries

Because of the illuminated cultivation of winter crops in recent years, there is now little talk of 'new seasons'. "Belgian and Dutch strawberries are now available all year round," affirms Wim Meyers, of Meyers Softfruit. He only stops growing for a few months a year, but last week he started with the harvest of the Sonata.

More Elsanta
Wim points out that the season at Meyers Softfruit starts with the early variety Sonata. "Then we switch to our main variety, Elsanta, and with this we continue until the end of the season, around Christmas. In terms of acreage, there have been no changes compared to last year, but the Elsanta production has been slightly higher in 2016." The grower explains that the company's clients are mostly interested in taste and quality. "Last year, we spent some brief periods without Elsanta and we had to supply our customers with alternative ones. Looking back, these turned out to be the wrong varieties. We evaluated the responses and decided to focus more on the Elsanta. This year we have been testing a lot of new alternatives. Hopefully, something good will come out of this so that we can do something next year with the right varieties."

It looks like a late year
The harvest at Meyers has been underway since week 11, but volumes are no longer that large. "This is due to the current weather conditions. It's dark again, with little sunshine, and temperatures are not really mild. We won't see large volumes from the greenhouse production until the end of April. It looks like it will be a late year for strawberries." Meyers supplies most of the strawberries to Veiling BelOrta. "As for prices, they currently stands at fine levels. On 23 March, the Sonata stood at around 7 Euro per kilo. The Clery is a little cheaper. Prices shouldn't drop anymore this week."

Redcurrants, blackberries and raspberries
Besides strawberries, Meyers also produces other soft fruits. "Everything to do with other berries has remained the same. Redcurrants, blackberries and raspberries are grown as spring crop under glass, and blackberries and raspberries are also cultivated in autumn under glass. For now, it seems all the berry crops grown by our company are arriving a week later than last year," concludes Wim.
