Poland: Impressive growth of domestic fruit and veg consumption

Retail sales of fruit and vegetables in Poland have recorded an impressive growth, as reported by the newspaper "Rzeczpospolita".

Lidl Poland informed that, as a result of cooperation with domestic suppliers, it has been selling a monthly average of 1.3 million kilos of apples, 1.7 million kilos of potatoes, more than 500 thousand kilos of pears and 300 thousand kilos of mushrooms.

"Attractive prices have also played a role in this sense. In the first half of 2015, due to high supply and the impact of the Russian embargo, the prices of most domestic fruits and vegetables decreased, which stimulated consumption," explains Mr Grzegorz Rykaczewski, an analyst of the agro-food sector at BZ WBK. In the second half, the adverse weather conditions contributed to the rise in prices, especially in the case of berries and vegetables.
