Bangladesh: Bogra potato farmers happy

Fair potato prices and record production are pleasing growers in Bogra this season. Favourable weather conditions during plantation contributed to the record yield and farmers are already placing the crop in cold storages. According to the Department of Agriculture Extension office a total of 87,030 hectares of land are under potato cultivation in the district and a production target of 0.7 million tonnes was set.

The sources said that this target had been exceeded with a total of 0.8 million tonnes of potato produced in the district. Farmers there have already completed the harvest and they are now expecting to recover the losses they incurred in the first phase of last year.

Abdus Satter, a farmer of Gobindapur union said one kg of potato is now being sold for between Tk 10 to Tk 15 in the field, while the production cost was Tk 5.0 to Tk 6.0. "I got 400 mounds (about 38 kg) of potato from two acres of land spending Tk 50 thousand. I have already earned Tk 0.1 million profit from selling of 250 maunds of potato last week," he added.
