Hungary: Weaknesses of domestic pear cultivation
Hungary's domestic pear sector has been losing competitiveness in the international markets due to several factors, namely the high proportion of old plantations, the cultivation of varieties with outdated maintenance, the lack of irrigation or the use of outdated storage facilities. The country is currently a net importer of fresh pears.
Despite this, according to CSO data, the country's fresh pear imports dropped by less than 2 percent in the period between January and November 2015, totalling 2.08 thousand tonnes, while exports grew by 15 percent, reaching 535 tonnes in the first eleven months of 2015.
Also, the price of domestic pears at the Budapest Wholesale Market was 10 percent higher between July 2015 and December compared to the same period a year earlier.
As regards the price of other important products during week 5, tomatoes, depending on origin, have stood between 374 and 590 HUF/kilo (1.20-1.90 Euro), while domestic apple varieties have reached an average of 192 HUF/kilo (0.62 Euro), compared to 138 HUF/kilo (0.44 Euro) in the same week last year.
