Austria’s favorite fruit promotes health, economy and jobs

“An apple all day - keeps the doctor away! This popular phrase has a claim to the truth. Apples aren’t just the favorite fruit of Austrians but they are also rich in vitamins, fibers and minerals,” states the agricultural spokesperson Leo Steinbichler of the Team Stronach in view of the “Day of the Apple”.

But despite a record summer and a good apple harvest the news is not only positive, Steinbichler has concerns because: "It is worrying that the large corporations advertise for cheap South African Fair Trade bananas and South African oranges, at the very moment that the apple crop is at its peak. While at the same time they promote Austria as a source of enjoyable food. It is insulting for the Austrian apple producers!

These mechanisms push the domestic apple production; the prices for farmers haven’t been so low in a long time. Therefore spokesperson of Team Stronach calls to the consumers to choose more often for the Austrian and local apples and apple products. That is not only healthy for the consumer but also for the economy and the job market, states Steinbichler.
