US(NJ): Peppadew Goldew production recovered after rains
In New Jersey, Goldew Peppadew peppers are grown for the fresh market. The Peppadew® Goldews™ were planted in May and harvest started at the end of August after a 90-day growing period. “Harvest will continue through October,” says Pierre Crawley with Peppadew USA.
Early rains during harvest caused some havoc with the quality of fruit. However, the plants recovered well. “The plants seemed to prefer the heat wave that followed after the rains and as a result, the fruit that is coming off the plants now is some of the nicest quality we have seen,” Crawley said. “We expect supplies to be adequate to supply pending orders and potential customers .”
Peppadew USA is the only farm that grows and markets fresh Goldew peppers in the US. The company distributes its product to Wakefern Foods’ Shoprite stores. “Shop Rite stores support sales of the fresh Peppadew Goldew in all stores in the New York and New Jersey marketplace," mentioned Crawley. Peppadew USA is looking to work with more farmers and expand distribution through exclusive channels nationally.
