A few months ago, FreshPlaza talked to Aaron Quesnel with Sky Harvest. The company grows microgreens and shoots on vertical shelves in a 2,100 ft² operation in the heart of Vancouver, BC.
Sustainability is key at Sky Harvest. The company delivers all its product by bicycle. Now, it has taken sustainability to the next level by becoming Canada’s first and only certified organic urban farm. Located in the heart of the city, Sky Harvest was recently granted organic certification for its small-scale production of microgreens to food retail. “We’ve always grown our product organically, but this certification gives consumers added assurance about our processes,” says Aaron Quesnel with Sky Harvest. Typically used for garnish and as points of interest, microgreens are packed with more nutrients than their full-grown counterparts and range from the delicate and mild, to the spicy and flavorful.Partnerships with food retail
Traditionally, Sky Harvest supplied microgreens to high-end restaurants. More recently, the company started partnering with local grocer Choices Market that likes to support local suppliers. For the past month, Sky Harvest has been selling in four of the chain’s stores. The company also delivers microgreens to Pomme Natural Market and is selling its products on www.spud.ca, an organic delivery company that serves the greater Vancouver area.
Quesnel hopes that the Sky Harvest story will inspire other farms to follow suit and help drive popularity of local organic food across Canada.
