Poland: Fruit and veg most often sold at discounters

Official data on the sales channels of fresh fruit and vegetables in Poland show that the largest share corresponds to discounters (30.3%), followed by supermarkets (16.4%) and hypermarkets (13.5%). In addition to modern distribution channels, convenience stores and street vendors continue to play an important role, with shares amounting to 11.6 and 14.0%, respectively.

Over the past 12 months, Polish households have allocated nearly 10.9 billion złoty (2.63 billion Euro) for the purchase of fresh fruits and vegetables, which is 2.1% less than in the same period last year, according to data supplied by the GFK Household Panel.

According to GFK data, the largest share of the fresh vegetable market in value terms corresponded to tomatoes and potatoes (40.5%), while the largest market share of the fresh fruit market corresponded to apples and strawberries (24.3%).

In terms of volume, over the past twelve months Polish households have mainly purchased potatoes (38.8%) and tomatoes (15%), and when it comes to fresh fruit they have bought mainly apples (29.1%).
