BEHR AG is a pan-European group of companies in vegetable production. On more than 4,000 acres, the company grows vegetables. In the summer lettuce is booming especially in German cultivation. "The German season is in full bloom," said Birger Exner marketing director of BEHR, "Since last week chard and fennel are available too. In the coming weeks products such as cauliflower, Bluccoli (a combination of cauliflower and broccoli) and a small form from SalaRico® or SalaCrip® will be sold.”

Drought is not a problem
Some farms of the BEHR collective are located in northern Germany. While in recent weeks the south suffered under immense amounts of rain, the north was plagued with a continuing drought. The farms of BEHR were largely spared the drought says Birger Exner: "We have the opportunity to irrigate each field. Therefore the drought is not a big problem for us. And recently it has rained properly again, so the dry season has been interrupted."
"Quality is satisfactory - temperatures affect growth"
Thanks to the irrigation system the quality is satisfactory according to Exner. "The quality of our salad is currently satisfactory. But the growth remains slightly below expectations due to the cool temperatures." This season BEHR is testing new products for the market. "We currently grow new products in test areas, and we will introduce them to our customers. Which ones will make it to the market, we cannot say at present."
