Norway: Fruit production up 30% in 2014, vegetables up 10%

The production of open ground and greenhouse vegetables in Norway amounted to 190,000 tonnes last year; an increase of 10% compared to 2013. Fruit production grew by almost 30%.

Between 2013 and 2014, the production of open ground vegetables increased from 153,000 to 158,400 tonnes, while production in greenhouses grew by 1,300 tonnes to 31,000 tonnes, according to official statistics.

Carrots, onions, cucumbers and tomatoes at the top
Carrots accounted for a third of the total open ground production, while onions represented 14%. Cucumbers and tomatoes still dominate in greenhouses and accounted for 51 and 44% of the total production under cover, respectively.

Apples and pears up, plums down
The total fruit production amounted to 15,800 tonnes in 2014, compared to 12,200 tonnes in the previous year. The apple production reached 13,200 tonnes in 2014, which represents an increase of 3,400 tonnes.

Pears increased by just under 200 tonnes to 340 tonnes from 2013 to 2014. Plum production dropped by 100 tonnes to 1,400 tonnes.

Strawberries and raspberries reigned supreme
Norway's open ground berry production increased by 2,500 tonnes to 11,500 tonnes from 2013 to 2014. Strawberry crops accounted for 73% of the total in 2014, while raspberries represented 22%.
