Sainsbury's launches grocery click & collect

Sainsbury's has begun the nationwide rollout of a grocery click & collect service which will see the facility brought to 100 locations by the end of the year.

Collection free from refrigerated vans

Customers using the service will be able to collect their purchases from a refrigerated van in a designated area of the store's car park. They will be able to choose collection slots from 8am to 1pm and 2pm to 8pm, Monday to Saturday, or any time when the store is open on a Sunday. There is no charge for using the service, but a minimum spend of £20 is required.

20 locations to be live by the end of March

Farnham in Surrey has been selected as the first store to offer grocery click & collect and the service will be rolled out to selected stores nationwide within weeks. Fosse Park, Harrogate, Newbury and Cannock are all among the first batch of click & collect openings. The launch builds on a trial last year when click & collect was introduced to seven London tube stations.

Accelerated growth now possible
The launch of click and collect is a much anticipated move that should speed up Sainsbury's online growth. During 2014/15, Sainsbury's online sales growth has slowed significantly to 6% in Q3 from over 10% a year earlier, in part reflecting the retailer's push to drive profitable sales growth and also low key marketing for its online operations as it relaunched its website. With click & collect now live and extra capacity in the crucial London market from next year provided by its first dark store, Sainsbury's now has a platform to drive its £1bn online business faster.
