South-Africa: Spar Group boasts 38.3% gain in sales

Spar Group increased its sales by 38.3 percent for the 17 weeks to January 24, it said on Friday.

The group, which boasts of stores such as Spar, Tops and Build It, said excluding the impact of BWG Group in Ireland, group sales in South Africa grew 8.7 percent with internally measured price inflation of 5.9 percent.

“Sales in comparable stores grew 8.1 percent.”

Spar bought a controlling stake in the BWG Group, which owns Spar stores in Ireland, for R880 million last year. BWG Group sales were included in the report for the full period.

“For comparability, sales increased by 1.6 percent in euro terms.” Spar shares closed 1.21 percent higher at R183.85 on the JSE.
