Northern Ireland: Lidl sales up 12.9%

Budget supermarket Lidl continued its growth surge in Northern Ireland with sales up 12.9 per cent over the past year. According to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel, the German-owned chain enjoyed a market share of 4.3 per cent over the 12 months to January 4.

Overall, sales at grocers across the north increased by 0.4 per cent over the year.

Tesco remained by far the largest player with a 35.4 per cent share of the market, although sales were down 0.9 per cent. Tesco has seen declining fortunes in recent months culminating in a decision earlier this month to halt 49 new-build stores across the UK with plans to shut another 43 - details of which have yet to be announced.

Sainsbury was the only other of the big name brands to experience a decline in the north over the year with sales down 0.1 per cent to give it a 17.9 per cent market share over-all.

Asda meanwhile edged closure to Sainsbury's to claim a 17.2 per cent slice of the overall pie thanks to a 2.2 per cent growth in sales.

There was a strong performance too by multiples - such as Iceland, M&S, and Dunnes Stores - which collectively saw a 5.1 per cent rise in sales giving them an 8.9 per cent market share.

However, symbols - such as Spar, SuperValu, Costcutter and Centra -experienced a combined 6.4 per cent decline in sales to share 9.4 per cent of the market.
