US: Whole Foods to unveil new stores Chicago-area

Whole Foods is preparing to open seven Chicago-area stores in former Dominick's locations, starting with a store later this month in Streeterville that aims to cater to office workers, tourists and residents in the area's high-rise apartments and condominiums.

When the Dominick's chain closed in late 2013, Whole Foods Market quickly snatched up leases for seven of the closing supermarkets. The organic and natural chain wasn't as quick, however, when it came to reopening the stores.

While prospective customers had to go elsewhere throughout 2014 for their groceries, industry watchers say the delayed openings could pay off for Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods, because its stores will look different from the old Dominick's stores and the chain has a built-in fan base among higher-end shoppers.

Before Whole Foods latest stores open, Mariano's planted itself deeper into the market, catering to customers looking for a mix of regular groceries and higher-end prepared foods. Mariano's now has 29 stores in the area after opening 16 in 2014, and has plans to keep growing, including another five openings slated for 2015.
