Kroger exec ranks among nation’s top retail leaders

One of Cincinnati-based Kroger Co.'s top executives, Lynn Marmer, has made a prestigious list of 25 People Shaping Retail's Future.

Marmer, group vice president of corporate affairs at Kroger, the nation's largest operator of traditional supermarkets, made the list compiled by the NRF Foundation. That's an arm of highly respected trade group the National Retail Federation.

NRF broke down the honorees into five categories: giver, dreamer, disruptor, influencer and power player. Marmer is one of six on the list that NRF calls "givers." People in that group are "changing retail and spreading inspiration by spearheading ground-breaking programs across a wide range of categories," NRF said in an article explaining the honors.

It recognized Marmer for spearheading Kroger's efforts to get supermarket companies to donate food by launching the Perishable Donations Partnership. That program enables supermarket employees to find meat, produce, dairy and bakery items that can be safely donated to food banks. Kroger has donated 195 million meals to community food banks through that program.

Marmer has been with Kroger since 1997, when she came on board as senior attorney in the legal department. She took over her current position a year later. She's in charge of external corporate communications, sustainability and social responsibility, and media, government and community relations, among other roles.

Not surprisingly, Marmer donates a lot of her time to nonprofit organizations. She's a board member of Feeding America, the largest hunger relief organization in the United States; the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber. She's also vice chair of the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority and a member of the Cincinnati Business Committee Education Task Force and FreeStore Foodbank, among numerous other organizations.
