Italy: Slow demand for pumpkins and artichokes

The Di Vincenzo Slavatore farm was established in 1979 and is currently producing artichokes (Violetto and Apollo) and pumpkins (moscata di Provenza). "Production starts towards the end of October and we start selling the vegetables in early January. Currently demand is lower than supply. Pumpkins are being sold at €0.45/kg," explains Lino Di Vincenzo (in the photo below), manager of the farm.

"We cultivate our vegetables in open fields using fertigation and treatments with authorised products. The weather really affected quantities- at the moment we have around 2,000 Violetto artichokes every other day and 40 tons of pumpkins."

"We sell our produce on the domestic market and our main competitors are Egypt and Tunisia. Artichokes are placed in 24-piece crates, whereas pumpkins are sold in bins."
