Spain: EU to aid Extremadura's growers

Extremadura's agricultural sector will receive 1 million Euro in aid to compensate for the losses caused by the Russian import ban. That is the amount that Brussels has allocated for the region's producers, the vast majority of which grow plums. The money has not yet been paid and is intended to compensate for the volume of fruit that could not be sold. According to the European Commission, 4.5 million kilos have been withdrawn in the region since August. A normal season, with equally normal prices, would have brought more than 3 million Euro in revenue.

The amount of aid varies depending on the origin of the fruit affected by the ban. If the product withdrawn has been donated to the Food Bank, growers will receive 34 cents/kilo. If it goes to any other food-related purpose, producers will be paid 15 cents/kilo if they are part of a fruit and vegetable producers' organisation (OPFH) and 10 cents if they are not members of an OPFH.
