Certified price for Sri Lankan onions
The price of a kilogramme of big onions which stood at between Rs.80 – 90, dropped to between Rs.30 – 50 rupees with the commencement of harvesting for this Yala Season.
Although the government was prepared to purchase a kilogramme of big onions for a certified price of Rs.60, most farmers did not come forward with their produce for such a price.
The reason being that the price did not cover the production cost – and Sathosa purchasing only selected stocks.
Meanwhile, certain farmers have begun to stockpile their harvest with the expectation of the big onion prices increasing in the open market.
However, with imported big onions flooding the markets over the past week, the price of domestic big onions dropped. Over the past several days farmers protested against this situation and also staged a demonstration in Dambulla on Tuesday compelling the government to increase the certified price to Rs.90.
