Demand for Brussels sprouts has been good through the Thanksgiving pull, though prices have eased up slightly. Though production has been slightly down and demand has been strong, prices aren't likely to approach those seen last year.“We're about halfway through our season, and the crop has been a little small,” said Steve Bontadelli of Pfyffer Associates in Santa Cruz, California. “The size of sprouts has been small because of a lack of rain, which has impacted overall yields.”
Demand has been growing over the last several years as media coverage on the health benefits of Brussels sprouts has spurred consumer interest. That rising demand made for a short market last year, when a shortage of supplies led to prices upwards of $30.00 for a carton. While prices are not quite that high this season, they are strong. As of November 21, a 25-pound carton out of California went for between $24.00 and $26.95.
“We're just coming off the Thanksgiving pull, so the market softened up,” said Bontadelli. “I think it will strengthen around December 10, for Christmas.”
