Replacement named as Food Lion president announces departure

Food Lion President Beth Newlands Campbell is leaving the company, with the grocery chain naming Bottom Dollar Food President Meg Ham as her replacement, effective Saturday.

Salisbury-based Food Lion said Newlands Campbell is departing for personal and professional reasons. She has been the company's president since late 2012.

Ham has been with Delhaize America, corporate parent of the Food Lion, Bottom Dollar and Hannaford supermarkets, since 1988. She has held a range of leadership posts at those chains.

"I look forward to maintaining our positive momentum at Food Lion by continuing to deploy our new strategy, serving our customers well and caring for our communities through Food Lion Feeds," Ham says in a prepared statement.

In her new post, she will lead all operations under the Food Lion banner, including strategic direction, financial performance, product assortment, pricing, customer service and marketing.

"We are extremely pleased to tap into internal talent to ensure a seamless transition of Food Lion operations to Meg Ham," says Kevin Holt, chief executive of Delhaize America.

Delhaize America also announced the following management changes:
  • Gene Faller, vice president of operations for Bottom Dollar Food, will assume leadership responsibilities for that chain.
  • J.J. Fleeman, senior vice president of Food Lion strategy, has been promoted to be Delhaize America's chief strategy and development officer.
Food Lion has more than 1,100 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states. It employs more than 63,000 people.
