Auckland's banana mystery solved

Produce company Turners & Growers has put its hand up over a banana shortage at Countdown supermarkets. The company said it was unable to deliver bananas to supermarkets on Sunday because of the Auckland power cut.

Countdown said this morning that it expected bananas to be back on sale in all its stores today.

Signs in some Countdown stores in Auckland said supplies had been "restricted" because of the power cut.

Countdown spokeswoman Jess Miller said the chain sourced its bananas in Auckland from two suppliers, including Turners & Growers, and she believed the shortage had something to do with the banana rooms they were stored in.

Earlier, Turners & Growers spokeswoman Kylie Horomia said the company had been lucky in having four backup generators and she believed it had had no problems supplying bananas to Countdown.

"Hopefully everything is caught up and it will be banana business as usual," she said.

Antoinette Shallue, a spokeswoman for rival supermarket group Foodstuffs, said it had no problems with the supply of bananas and no issues as a result of the Auckland power cut.
