WinCo Foods buys 12-acre Garland tract to build its latest store

One of the grocers expanding in North Texas has bought a 12-acre tract of land to develop a large grocery store in Garland.

WinCo Foods LLC plans to build a new 85,000-square-foot grocery store at 1122 West Centerville Road at the northeast quadrant of Centerville and Interstate 635 in Garland. The store is scheduled for completion by spring 2015.

The Idaho-based grocer — known for going head-to-head with Walmart (Dallas-Fort Worth's largest grocer) — began expanding in Dallas-Fort Worth in the past year, by opening its first two stores in McKinney and Fort Worth. Winco Foods plans to open a North Richland Hills and Lewisville location as well.

This 12-acre parcel of land in Garland gives WinCo an opportunity for growth and further visibility to North Texas residents, said McGregor Converse, a senior vice president at Dallas-based Venture Commercial.

Converse, Kevie Beard, Jonathan Cooper and Theo Thompson of Venture Commercial represented WinCo in the real estate deal. Jim Weir of The Retail Connection represented the seller, IUM Investors LP.

Caroline Woodbury and Don Woodbury of DWC Commercial Properties coordinated the acquisition, development and entitlement of the property.

Real estate sources say they expect grocers to continue to expand in Dallas-Fort Worth as the region's economy continues to outpace the national economy.
